CCC Graduation Ceremony Set for May 7

Coffeyville Community College is proud to announce that more than 280 students are eligible to graduate this spring.  The graduation ceremony will take place on May 7th at 10 a.m. in the west gym of Nellis Hall on CCC's Main Campus.

Keynote speaker will be Terry D. Powell, M.D. Powell was born and raised in Coffeyville, Kansas.  He graduated CCC with a 4.0 g.p.a. in 1962 and went on to graduate from the University of Kansas in 1964 and KU Medical school in 1968. After a yearlong internship, he served a residency in Radiation Oncology, plus a one year fellowship, following which, he served two years as a Major at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center during the Vietnam War, where he ran the Radiation Oncology Program.

Dr. Powell served one year as an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico and was associated with the Pi Meson Accelerator at Los Almos National Laboratory, testing medical applications of the accelerator for treatment of cancer. He also spent a year in a busy radiation oncology practice in California before returning to the Tulsa area, where over the next several years he was Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at both Hillcrest and Tulsa Regional Hospitals.

During these years, Dr. Powell participated in the development of a cancer program at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center and, with him, the program soon gained accreditation by the American College of Surgeons.

After returning to the northeast Oklahoma area, Powell picked up farming pecans and ranching. Since retiring in 2012, Dr.Powell has continued the pecan farming endeavor. His wife, Barbara, helps with the pecans when she can. His two sons, Eric and Andrew, chose the medical field as well, they are both boarded in Endocrinology.

The student address will be given by graduating sophomore Reina Garcia.
