Kayla Semmel shows off the medal she earned from the NAQT sectional in January and another from the Snow Bowl tournament earned earlier in December.

This year in the National Academic Quiz Tournament Kansas Community College Sectional, one Coffeyville Community College student was extra successful. Kayla Semmel, a sophomore from Manhattan, Kan. placed third individually in the sectional tournament held in Concordia, Kan. on Jan. 25. A total of 51 students competed at the tournament.

In six rounds of competition, Semmel heard 120 toss up questions, and successfully answered 28 of them. Her most dominating round of the day was round three against Redlands. She heard 21 toss-up questions, and answered nine first and correctly. 

Teams at the NAQT sectionals compete with four students each with the individual answering first with the correct answer earning points for their respective team.
