COLUMBUS, Kan. — Students looking for a hands-on career in a growing industry can turn their passion into a profession through the Powersports Technology Program at Coffeyville Community College's Columbus Technical Campus.
Beginning this year, the program is now offered full-time for post-secondary students, providing a more comprehensive training experience and allowing students to complete their education faster. The program also remains available to high school juniors and seniors through part-time enrollment, giving students an opportunity to begin building technical skills before graduation.
Scholarships and financial aid are available to qualified students, and the program is FAFSA-eligible, making technical education accessible and affordable for students seeking a rewarding career.
The nine-month certificate program prepares students to diagnose, maintain, and repair motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, personal watercraft, and other powersports vehicles. Through extensive hands-on training, students develop the technical knowledge and real-world experience needed to succeed in dealerships, repair facilities, manufacturers, and service centers throughout the region and across the country.
Students also gain experience using Blackpurl 2.0, an industry-standard dealership management software platform used throughout the powersports industry. Access to Blackpurl gives students valuable experience with the same technology dealerships use for service operations, inventory management, customer relations, and business processes.
The program benefits from a partnership with Jay Hatfield Motorsports, helping connect classroom instruction with real-world industry knowledge and trends. Offered through the Columbus Technical Campus of Coffeyville Community College, the Powersports Technology Program is located at Jay Hatfield Chevrolet. This location provides students with a unique training environment that reflects the professional setting they will encounter in the powersports industry.
"Many of our students come into the program with a passion for powersports, and our goal is to help them turn that passion into a career," said Mike Mathes, Powersports Technology Instructor. "We're excited to now offer the program full-time for post-secondary students, giving them more opportunities for hands-on training while gaining experience with industry-standard technology, dealership operations, and the latest service practices. Our goal is to provide students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the powersports industry."
In just two semesters, full-time students can earn their certificate and begin pursuing careers in powersports service and repair, dealership operations, equipment maintenance, and related technical fields. The program offers an affordable pathway into a high-demand industry while providing students with practical, workforce-ready skills.
