Phi Theta Kappa Holds Membership Meeting

Twenty-five members of Phi Theta Kappa at Coffeyville Community College, met Monday, September 22, for a 5:30 p.m. fellowship dinner and general membership meeting in room 107 Weinberg Hall.  Guests at the meeting were Marj Satterfield, president of Glad Wags in Tulsa and Sonia Larimore of Windsor Place.  Also present were the two service dogs, Boomer and Abby.

The meeting began with the members repeating the Phi Theta Kappa Mission Statement which has as its main purpose, to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students.  Co-vice presidents of fellowship, Linelle Wilson and Aubrey Liby, led the members in an ice-breaker.  Members then had an opportunity to sign-up for nine upcoming activities which included fund raising projects as well as social activities such as a hayrack ride and wiener roast and attendance at the Oklahoma State University Walk-Around.  The chapter’s educational program was presented by Marj Satterfield who introduced the chapter’s service dog, Abby.  Trainer Satterfield explained to the students the differences between a service and a therapy dog.  She also encouraged Abby to demonstrate several of the things she had learned from her training.  The dog will be presented to the children of The Little Light House in early December.

During the chapter’s business meeting, copies of the minutes and financial report were distributed.  Jesus Medina was presented as the September Member of the Month.  President Dezirae Hamrick reported on the Five Star Competitive Edge and CollegeFish.org projects.  The Scholarship Hallmark Report included the Ronald McDonald House Surveys, the Case Study Challenge, and the Southern District Meeting at Allen County Community College on September 27.

Co-vice presidents of service, Sara Lumm and Ian Fladie reported on the non-perishable food drive, Gifts for the Nations Clothing drive, the campus blood drive, Operation Christmas Child and mini laps at The Little Light House on September 20.  Additional reports were given by Jarod Taylor, communications; Jesus Medina, public relations; Sang Pierre Gomez, international students; Trae Venerable, fund raising projects; Barbara Palmer, Relay For Life; and Linda McFate, Advisor.

The chapter is currently selling pancake feed tickets for the Daylight Defenders Pancake Feed on Saturday, October 4, from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church.  The next chapter meetings include an officers meeting at 5:30 p.m. October 6 in the Phi Theta Kappa office and a general membership meeting on October 20, Weinberg Hall 107, at 5:30 p.m.
