Associate in Arts Degree Requirements

This degree is meant to transfer to a baccalaureate degree-granting institution and can be earned online as well as in the classroom. The student must complete 64 semester hours with a grade point average of 2.00 (C) or above.  There is a minimum cumulative general education requirement of 34 semester hours.  A minimum number of semester credit hours will be required in each of the fields listed below.  NOTE:  No courses numbered below 100 apply.

I.  Written and Oral Communications (9 hours)

English Composition I
English Composition II

and any ONE of the following:

Creative Writing
Public Speaking
Technical Writing
Interpersonal and Group Communications

II.  Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 hours)

A minimum of 6 credit hours from the following:

Economics
Government
Geography
Psychology
Sociology
Marriage & Family

III.  Science and Math (8 hours)

Mathematics*

A minimum of 3 credit hours from the following:

College Algebra or Higher Level Math

Science*

A minimum of 5 credit hours from a Biological or Physical Science Area:

Biological Science Area

Environmental Science
Anatomy & Physiology
Microbiology
Biology
Biology I: Cellular and Molecular Biology

Physical Science Area

Astronomy
Chemistry
Physical Science
Physics

IV.  Arts and Humanities (6 hours)

A minimum of 6 credit hours from the following:

Art
Theatre
History
Music
Humanities
Communications
Foreign Language
Literature
Philosophy

V.  Computer Science (3 hours)

A minimum of 3 credit hours from the following:

Computer Information Systems
or Computer Concepts and Applications
or Higher Level Computer Course

VIII.  Area of Interest (30 semester hours)

 

* Student should check with advisor for specific course requirements at transfer institution.

** College Orientation I is required for all first-time, full-time, degree-seeking students.

***College Orientation II is required for all Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in General Studies students.  Students should enroll in the course following the completion of 45 credit hours including English Composition I.
